No guarantee of future selection
Posted by Agencies at 08:27 AM GMT on Mar 17, 2009 | MELBOURNE (AFP): Australian batsman Adam Voges has withdrawn from the one-day and Twenty20 squad due to play in South Africa, citing a clash with his wedding plans.
The 29-year-old said he could not reschedule his 5 April wedding, which had been planned for 12 months, and admitted the decision could affect future selection prospects, despite assurances to the contrary.
"There's people coming from a lot of different places, it's been planned for a long time now," he told reporters.
The West Australian, who has played for his country in three Twenty20 matches and a single one-dayer, said he spoke with chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch and coach Tim Nielsen before making his decision.
"There's certainly no guarantees that I'm going to get selected again and I fully understand that and realise that," he said. "I spoke at length to Andrew Hilditch and Tim Nielsen and they were both really good, they were both very supportive and Andrew said this won't affect [future selection] in any negative fashion. So that's always reassuring to hear, but he did say at the same time there wouldn't be any guarantee that there would be further selection."
Voges asked for permission to fly home when he realised the ceremony clashed with the one-dayer but Hilditch said it was impractical. "This would have rendered him unavailable for at least one, if not two, one-day internationals of the five match series," he said. "Given the risk of injury in Adam‘s absence which could have left the Australian squad one batsman short for the tour, the (selectors) weren’t able to meet that request."
He will be replaced in the squad by fellow West Australian Marcus North.
