Obama is a 'poor ignoramus' - Chavez

Both presidents to come face-to-face for the first time in April

CARACAS (AFP): Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez described his US counterpart Barack Obama as a "poor ignoramus" during a television show yesterday.

The controversial leftist leader lampooned Obama for apparently saying Chavez had been exporting terrorism.

"Now they are going to accuse me of exporting terrorism? At the very least we could say 'poor ignoramus.' He should study so that he knows the reality of Latin America."

Chavez also said Obama had accused him of being an "obstacle to development in Latin America," without specifying where or when Obama had supposedly made the comments.

"Such ignorance," Chavez said during his weekly television address, "the real obstacle has been the empire that he today presides over, which has exported terrorism for nearly 200 years, has launched atomic bombs on innocent cities, has bombarded, invaded and issued orders to kill whenever they have taken the notion."

Chavez's comments came after a meeting on Thursday with US Democratic congressman William Delahunt, who is seen as testing the water for a normalization of relations between the two countries.

Chavez and Obama are expected to come face-to-face for the first time at a summit of leaders from across the Americas in April in Trinidad.
