Netanyahu pushes coalition talks with Labour party

Both under pressure to reach a deal

Posted by Agencies at 09:41 AM GMT on Mar 24, 2009

JERUSALEM (AFP): Israeli prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu and Labour party leader Ehud Barak have been personally involved today in efforts to reach a coalition agreeement, Israeli public radio reported.

The two leaders have been supervising the talks since 4:30 am (0230 GMT) in an attempt to overcome obstacles to the centre-left Labour joining Netanyahu's conservative Likud and the right-wing Yisrael Beitenu and Shas parties, the radio station said.

The two are under pressure to reach a deal before Labour's central committee holds a special meeting at 4:30 pm, although a deal on joining the government threatens to split Labour.
