Intel kicks Nvidia when it’s down

Without a CPU it’s done for, CEO claims

THE CEO of Intel said graphics company Nvidia is in a weak position and that will get worse as graphics technology becomes part of the microprocessor.

Paul Otellini told a Goldman Sach Technology conference in San Francisco that Nvidia is simply trying to defend its status quo. When Intel’s Larrabee technology is ready, Nvidia will face fierce competition because customers would be able to choose who to buy discrete graphics chips.

He didn’t mention AMD’s ATI division, which also is a competitor to Nvidia and will compete with Intel too.

Paul OtelliniNvidia believes that the so-called graphics processing units (GPUs) it makes are here to stay, but clearly has the jitters. It has an agreement with Taiwanese firm Via but it’s pretty unclear how much that will help Nvidia.

Despite the economic downturn, Otellini appears to be pretty bullish about the chip giant’s future. A few weeks back, Intel announced a push on 32-nanometre process technology. He also told the conference that while Netbooks are a bright spot in the industry, it shouldn’t be considered to be a replacement for fully fledged microprocessors in notebooks.

After making a big push into the Netbook sphere with the introduction of its cut-down Atom microprocessor, Intel clearly remains somewhat paranoid that sales of its chips into Netbooks could cannibalise its lucrative notebook CPUs.
