February 7, 2012 Print Email | Greater China to buy 23 million netbooks this year
But ASPs will bite
Posted by The News staff at 08:46 AM GMT on Mar 06, 2009 | THE TAIWANESE Ministry of Economic Affairs has used quango the Market Intelligence Center to conduct a survey into sales of netbooks in the “Greater China” region.
Greater China is usually defined to include mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
The survey concluded that 23 million netbooks will ship in the region this year, but because there’s intense price competition, the average selling price (ASP) will fall this year.
During the first quarter, 10-inch netbooks will become the mainstream product. Acer has already launched a 10-inch machine and Dell will also roll out a 10-incher this year.
Shortages of Intel Atoms were resolved in the fourth quarter of last year, while low priced netbooks sold well at the end of the year compared to mobile phones, TVs and global positioning system (GPS) products.
For the full calendar year 2008, the survey estimates that 11.10 million shipped. Acer Aspire is currently the market leader and with Asus and its Eee machine, they both grabbed 80 per cent of the total pie.
