Google joins Firefox in Euro antitrust case

Let Giant fight Giant

Posted by The News staff at 03:57 AM GMT on Feb 25, 2009

SEARCH ENGINE giant Google wants to offer its point of view to the European Union in an antitrust investigation into Microsoft’s browser marketing.

The EU is investigating whether or not Microsoft should allow people to choose other browsers rather than Internet Explorer within the Windows operating system.

Google – which habitually describes itself as “not evil” – does have an axe to grind. It introduced its own browser called Chrome last year, which has met with a somewhat indifferent reception.

A formal investigation into Microsoft hasn’t yet started, but Google wants to become a third party in the case, obviously for its own reasons. Google wanted to team up with Yahoo last year over advertising, but after Microsoft moaned a little, the US Justice Department warned it would launch an investigation if the deal happened.

Microsoft plays the second fiddle to Google as far as search technology and advertising is concerned. It never really did get the hang of the Internet until after it happened.
