GE GLOBAL RESEARCH has inaugurated a new R&D centre in Bangalore. The facility, located on GE's technology campus, is expected to house nearly 2,000 researchers.
"A global company like GE needs to have a strong global R&D presence to be successful. It enables us to localise technology and product development in emerging markets such as India and China," GE spokesperson Todd Allhart told The News on Wednesday. "At the same time, it enables us to go after the best and brightest research talent in specific skillsets that we need all over the world. In India, for example, we have access to an abundance of expertise in analytics and modeling that greatly complements other research skillsets we have across our R&D centres."
According to Allhart, the new facility will "bolster GE's research capabilities" in health care and sustainable energy for local technology, product development and global innovation projects.
Mark Little, senior VP and director of GE Global Research, expressed similar sentiments.
"The engineers and researchers here are part of a network of 30,000 technologists across GE who work to 'redefine what's possible.' They work on healthcare initiatives that save lives. They are working to bring safe drinking water to those who need it. They help develop reliable, clean power for millions of people around the world," explained Little. "Our mission today is the same as it was when Thomas Edison founded GE. We drive breakthrough technology that the world needs and that will help our company grow. This latest expansion is just another sign of our commitment to technology and innovation."
Since 2001, GE has made capital investments totaling $330 million to expand its global research facilities in New York, Munich and Shanghai. The corporation has has also doubled its annual research and development expenditures from $2.3 billion to $4.3 billion.
