Commercial middleware powers Aegis combat system

Designers of mission-critical systems 'turning to open architecture approach'

Goahead Software has confirmed that Lockheed Martin successfully implemented its Saffire middleware in the US Navy's Aegis Open Architecture (AOA) Cruiser Modernisation (CGM) programme.

The company also announced that it had chosen DLT Solutions to further market its open architecture solutions.

"Designers of mission-critical systems are turning to an open architecture approach to ensure uptime, so that they can maximise budget, meet schedules and reduce project risk," Goahead president Dr. Asif Naseem told The News. "Partnering with DLT, a leading provider of technical solutions to government, extends Goahead's reach within this market and strengthens DLT's ability to fulfill requirements around availability, real-time data capture and fault management."

According to Naseem, standards-based platforms were "catalysing" a change in the creation of advanced warfighter systems.

"Systems integrators are looking towards open architecture solutions that ensure extremely high availability, to forego the cost and schedule risks that are commonly associated with the traditional, proprietary approach. These platforms must include availability and fault-management capabilities aimed at service continuity in the event of hardware and software failures," explained Naseem. "Saffire, which is based on service availability forum standards, ensures uptime of all critical resources in a system - hardware, operating system and applications."

DLT Solutions CTO Van Ristau told The News that his copmany recognised GoAhead as a partner with "unique" strengths.

"Their products are deployed in some very demanding system environments where mission success is measured with incredibly tight parameters - lives are on the line. DLT is proud to be working with the Goahead team, especially on DoD common computing environment programmes. Goahead complements our technology portfolio very nicely, enabling our customers to find a total solution in one place," added Ristau.

Aegis, the sea-based element of the US Ballistic Missile Defense System, is capable of quickly detecting, tracking and engaging multiple targets. The system was developed using commonly available, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computing hardware and software.
