Chevron blames Petroecuador for Amazon oil spills

Ecuador "exonerated Texaco role"

Posted by The News staff at 07:23 AM GMT on Feb 20, 2009

OIL COMPANY Chevron has defended charges it was responsible for massive oil spillages in Ecuador and claimed reports were based on information from Petroecuador. Earlier this week we reported on the allegations.

The Amazon Defence Coalition alleged that Chevron had misled the Securities and Exchange Commission and downplayed a $27 billion liability.

Texaco, owned by Chevron, is alleged to have admitted to spilling 18 billion gallons of toxic waste into Amazon tributaries between 1964 to 1990. Chevron denies this and says that the government of Ecuador has absolved the firm of any liability. Chevron Logo from company site

A representative from Chevron has now claimed that advocates for a lawsuit against the firm rely on Petroecuador to push their case. He said that state newspaper El Telegrafo reported last week that this firm had spilled four million gallons of oil since 1990.

The representative continued: “That Chevron should be somehow responsible for Petroecuador operations of the last 18 years defies logic. This is simply one example of the numerous obvious flaws contained in [Richard] Cabrera’s work.”
