Alaskan volcano erupts

No casualties reported

WASHINGTON (AFP): There has been a major volcanic eruptionĀ in the US state of Alaska.

Mount Redoubt has erupted, sending a cloud of ash and smoke across the surrounding area, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

A first eruption came late yesterday, according to the observatory, and was followed by three more early today.

Mount Redoubt is located on the western shore of Cook Inlet, in the general area of Anchorage.

The National Weather Service warned that winds were carrying the ash north toward the Susitna Valley.
