Regime change on the Indian Ocean island 'unconstitutional', it says
Posted by Agencies at 11:04 AM GMT on Mar 20, 2009 | ADDIS ABEBA (AFP): The African Union, an intergovernmental organisation made up of 53 African states, today suspended the membership of Madagascar saying the change in government on the Indian Ocean island was "unconstitutional".
"The PSC has decided, according to AU texts, to suspend the participation of Madagascar from bodies and organs of the AU," said Bruno Nongoma Zidouemba, the Burkina Faso ambassador, after chairing a two-hour meeting of the body's Peace and Security Council. "The council is of the opinion that what occurred in Madagascar is an unconstitutionnal change of government," added the diplomat.
The African bloc's move follows the European Union's branding the takeover a coup d'etat on Thursday and Washington called it "undemocratic".
The new leader of a self-styled transition government, Andry Rajoelina, had earlier suspended parliament.
