AAI unveils new unmanned aircraft system

Designed to meet the requirements of tactical and maritime missions

AAI CORPORATION has unveiled the Mark 4.7, a small Aerosonde-class unmanned aircraft system (SUAS).

The new SUAS carries a multi-sensor payload that combines high-fidelity electro-optic, infrared and laser range finder/pointer capabilities, along with a common data link. An upgraded wing and fuselage faciliatates the successful completion of airborne missions up to 12 hours in length.

"Our Aerosonde small unmanned aircraft systems, or SUAS, are known for their high endurance and robust intelligence-gathering capabilities. The Mark 4.7 aircraft builds on these features and adds increased payload capacity, an expeditionary footprint and a low acoustic signature ideal for covert operations," AAI VP of unmanned aircraft systems Steven Reid told The News.

"AAI's Aerosonde SUAS are designed for flexibility in launch, operation, ground control technology interoperability and landing. By creating a robust fleet of aircraft that combine endurance with superior mission flexibility, customers can be certain that AAI can help them meet any intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance need."

Reid explained that the aircraft was designed to meet the requirements of tactical and maritime missions when "persistent intelligence and surveillance are required."

"It is capable of fully autonomous flight, including takeoff and landing, as well as catapult launch and innovative recovery methods," added Reid.

The Mark 4.7 is compatible with AAI's expeditionary ground control station, which allows for fast, easy setup and launch. The system also utilises a newly integrated launch and recovery system for space-constrained field and shipboard operations.
